# How encrypted sync works

> Move the vault between your devices without turning the server into a reader.

Tuck syncs encrypted vault data so your other signed-in devices can download it and unlock it locally.

The server does not need your plaintext thought body to synchronize the encrypted record.

## On a new device

1. Sign in to your Tuck account.
2. Tuck downloads the encrypted vault snapshot.
3. Unlock it with the existing vault passphrase or Recovery Kit.
4. The device can now read and update the same vault.

Do not create a new vault just because you are on a new phone, tablet, or browser.

## Attachments

Attachment bytes are encrypted with the vault key as well. Sync can transfer those encrypted blobs separately from the main snapshot.
